ARA and ANVCA Congratulate Biden, Sullivan, Young

November 11, 2020 By ancsaregional

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 11, 2020

ARA and ANVCA Congratulate Biden, Sullivan, Young

The ANCSA Regional Association (ARA) and the Alaska Native Village Corporation Association (ANVCA) issued the below statement on the 2020 federal elections:

The ANCSA Regional Association and Alaska Native Village Corporation would like to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, Senator Dan Sullivan and Representative Don Young on their victories.

As Alaska Native Corporations, we know that collaboration and coordination with elected officials is critically important to advancing the needs of our people. We especially rely on our Congressional delegation in Washington, where Alaska Native people – and the Alaska tribal system as a whole – are too often misunderstood.

Sen. Sullivan and Rep. Young are proven champions for Alaska’s native people and their unique needs. Working with them and the Biden administration, we look forward to making further progress in the fight against COVID-19 and addressing urgent priorities for Indigenous education, safety, jobs and the economy.

ARA and ANVCA thank these and all the elected officials we work with for their service and commitment to building a brighter future.

ARA and ANVCA Raise Concerns as Census Bureau Moves to Finish Count Early

August 7, 2020 By ancsaregional

August 7, 2020

The ANCSA Regional Association (ARA) and the Alaska Native Village Corporation Association (ANVCA) issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Census Bureau’s announcement that it will end its 2020 data collection process on September 30 rather than October 31:

“We urge the Census Bureau to reconsider its expedited schedule and to ensure all Indian Country, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian people are accounted for in the 2020 Census.

We are alarmed to see that, during a time of extreme difficulty for Native communities across the nation, the Census Bureau has elected to expedite its 2020 data collection schedule. In Alaska, our communities already face immense challenges to meet regular Census deadlines, as more than 80 percent of our communities are only accessible by air or water. No doubt due in part to these challenges, reports indicate that Alaska is currently last among all states in census self-response rates.

Cutting the counting period short could lead to our communities losing out on critical federal support for schools, hospitals, emergency response, and more.“
